This highly ambitious, beautifully produced adaptation of Emile Zola’s great masterpiece takes us to a mining town in Northern France in the late 19th century.  The series depicts the harsh working conditions, dire poverty and life-and-death dangers the coal miners face, day in and day out, and the political commitment that inspires them to revolt and launch a brutal strike. Dazzling production values and forceful performances deftly bring Zola’s fierce world to life.  But this most recent reinterpretation of his monumental novel also gives prominence to several characters omitted from previous film adaptations, with a pointed emphasis on the position of women in society.

Series creator and screenwriter Julien Lilti is best known as co-writer of the film Hippocrates: Diary of a French Doctor (2014) and the Canal+ spin-off series Hippocrate (2018-19). Other credits include the animated series Le monde de Pahé (2009) and Adama (2015), and the Netflix series Family Business (2019).  Director David Hourrègue has directed an impressive 66 episodes of the interactive series Cut (2015-19) and 63 episodes of the series Skam France (2018-20).
